MINIMISE

A Speed Rating is simply a way of expressing a horses race time as a number, the higher the number the faster the horse. They are standard fare in American form guides & are an invaluable tool in assessing who are the main chances in a race. At  the Olympics in the pool & on the track it is the swiftest that prevail so why would the races be any different. Obviously there are a number of other variables to be be taken into account such as weight, barrier, track condition, tempo, jockey & trainer but the basic knowledge of who given the right circumstances is the fastest galloper in the race is of paramount importance.

In the past handicapping has been done using a weight rating table & a maiden was a maiden. So if there were 2 maidens over 1200m on any given day at Ballarat at both the winners carried the same weight then as far as the weight rating handicappers was concerned both runs were identical as a betting reference going forward. What if 1 of the maidens won his race in half a second  (about 3 lengths) faster than the other race. winner. Wouldnt you want to know that information, especially if the 2 winners met up against each other in a C1 at their next start!!

On Saturday the 11th of July we launched our brand new form engine, the culmination of 5 years hard work and the realisation of a vision for a new style of formguide. Way back in 2005 6 years after I had created the first Horsetorque Speed Rating for Australian racing I took up the role of Senior NSW Analyst for Best Bets, during this time my selections were heard in Queensland on racing radio 4TAB and I became a regular contributor for Practical Punting Monthly.

Late that year the Horsetorque reference manual was released and Aussie punters had the data required to create there own Speed Ratings. Many discovered that they are a most powerful tool but then they also realised was how much racing there is and how hard it is to keep up to date with your ratings. Horsetorque the Speed ratings website was launched in 2006 where our format was basic and we only covered 6 meetings per week, we now provide Speed Guides for as many as 40 meetings per week, all with greater depth and clarity. The launch of Phoenix took us to a whole new level of Speed Rating information. I have the pleasure of having a good friend and business partner who happens to be 1 of Australias premier prgrammers, web designers and game designers and it was he who asked how I went about analysing the form. I told him how structured I was and what processes I went through to develop my markets, he just looked at me and said " I think I can make a computer model of you" and that is were Phoenix started. Its first version was launched as ARIS (Artificial Race Intelligence Sytem) about 2 years ago and was updated last year with ARIS 2 which fixed a couple of bugs. Getting the form up was still a laborious task as creating Speed Ratings for about 4000 horses per week is an intensive task. ARIS was putting core numbers up and I then had to run my eye over it and make any adjustments required. PHOENIX has taken that technology to new extremes and from all the fantastic feedback Our current members are loving it.
